Cultures at Work explores the challenges and opportunities presented by the
growing inclusion of a culturally diverse workforce within the non-profit,
community services sector. The book describes a range of actual and potentially
conflictive situations such as: Staff attitudes or behaviours which are
perceived by clients or other colleagues as inappropriate or discriminatory;
tense situations between managers and employees that can be attributed to
linguistic and cultural misunderstandings and potential under-utilization of
talents and resources of immigrant employees
Ana
Maria Fantino weaves theoretical concepts with examples, real stories, myths and
poetry, as she develops a framework for understanding the tacit dynamics of
interaction between people of different cultural backgrounds. She also
identifies the main issues relating to world migration and the journeys migrants
embark upon when they decide or are forced to cross borders.
Through
dialogues, based on the lived experiences of Canadian born and foreign born
managers and employees, Ana Maria Fantino vividly illustrates ways in which
culture plays out in the everyday life at the workplace. She also provides
suggestions and recommendation for dealing with cultural differences at work, a
glossary of terms, and an extensive bibliography.
