Direct from the Land of Oz, this site has a name that says it all. Described as a “Resource Bank,” the numerous links on the front page take you into a wealth of volunteer information. Recruitment, policy development, volunteer recognition and motivation and volunteer statistics are just a smattering of some of the information you will find here. They are clear to point out that much of the information is from an Australasian perspective, but they link out to a whole variety of other information sources.

Foundation for Rural Living

Most not-for-profit and philanthropic websites focus on urban issues and on urban clientele. The Foundation for Rural Living’s site is dedicated to promotion of voluntary and not-for-profit initiatives within rural Canada. As mentioned on the site, “The Foundation for Rural Living (FRL), founded in 1979, is an initiative to stimulate investment to revitalize rural communities faced with persistent struggles in achieving social, economic and cultural opportunities.” An Ontario initiative, this organization and site is a great source of fundraising information, and research related to the role of philanthropy in rural settings.

International Association for Volunteer Effort (IAVE)

“The International Association for Volunteer Effort (IAVE) is an international non-governmental organization that promotes, celebrates, and strengthens volunteerism worldwide. IAVE has individual and organizational members in some 80 countries around the world.” IAVE promotes national volunteer centres, youth involvement in volunteerism, and public awareness of volunteerism. It is probably best known for the biennial IAVE World Volunteer Conference.

United Nations Volunteers

UNV is the volunteer arm of the United Nations. It is a program that supports global human development by helping mobilize and promote volunteerism throughout the world. The site notes that, “There are close to 5,000 qualified and experienced women and men of over 150 nationalities serving each year in developing countries as UN Volunteers.” This site not only reports on the activities of this organization, but also posts UN volunteer job opportunities.
